WHY WE NEED FLUIDS
  • Regulate body temperature

DEHYDRATION - THE AFFECTS
2% Dehydration 
  • Lowered Cognitive Performance (Gaoua, 2010; Dougherty et al, 2006) 
  • Higher Rates of Perceived Effort (Evans, Sherriffs & Maughan, 2009).  
  • Lowered Strength and Endurance Levels (Evans, Sherriffs & Maughan, 2009).
3-4% Dehydration 
  • Increased: Core temperature, Heart rate and Perceived effort 
  • Reduced: Aerobic capacity, reaction time, judgement, concentration and decision making abilities
>4% Dehydration 
  • May be fatal 
  • Emergency help may be required
SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION
  • No urination 
  • Unexplained headaches 
  • Lethargy  
  • Cramping
MONITORING HYDRATION 
  • Urine colour 
  • Thirst  
  • Urine Specific Gravity Testing  
  • S.G. Must test > 1.020 to recommence work underground
